Batch Management is integrated with all the modules of SAP ECC 6.0. It supports the management and processing of batches in all of a company’s business processes. Batch Management can be used where the user wants to kept his stock in batches as well as for each type of movement we can use batch. Batch Management is mandatory for the Pharmaceutical, Textile and Food Processing Industries where all the materials will be identified by their batches/lot only.
Here I will explain the Batch Management with reference to the MM Module because Material Management is the base of Batch Management. In other modules we can use the functionality of the same but the master data will be setup in MM module only.
Prerequisite:
We can only create batches and batch master records for a material if the material is to be handled in batches. To do this, we must set the Batch Management indicator in the material master record as per the screen shot. Batch Management is company specific data, so that if we tick batch management for one plant then this will be implemented for all plants.
Now the material has been extended for Batch Management. After that for each movement we need to create batch. Batch can be created manually and automatically.
Goods Receipt:
Create PO and do MIGO, you can see the screen shot of MIGO and check I have given the Batch number at the item level. This batch automatically created after posting of the document.
Now the batch of the material has been created. We can check this batch by using MSC3n or edit the characteristics MSC2n. In the change batch we can enter date of manufacturing, shelf life Exp. Date and other information of the batch.
Inspection lot will be created for this batch and in QA32 we have to clear the stock i.e. Usage decision and the stock will moved from Quality stock to unrestricted or blocked stock.
At the time of movement of goods, Batch is mandatory. So we will provide the Batch number to move or consumption of the material. You can see now that Batch is mandatory for each movement of the material.
I hope this document will help you for the better understanding of Batch management in SAP.
